Art and Mind 2006
Theatre Royal, and other spaces, Winchester, 9-12 March
Space, Architecture and the Brain.
We will consider space and our relationship to it through the sciences
and the arts, from an evolutionary perspective to contemporary
neuroscience, and through its use and expression in architecture,
music and the arts. Through talks, debates, discussions and performance,
Art and Mind juxtaposes new insights from the brain sciences and
psychology with discussion, illustration and performance from a
wide range of the arts, to explore the theme in question. Over
the course of the weekend, each event deepens the insight one view
can offer the other. The audience is the third point in the triangle.
We already have commitment from the US (John Zeisal/American Institute
of Architects) working on neuroscience/well being/architecture;
Charles Jencks, architect and author; Mike Wheeler at Univ of Stirling,
work on evolution of intelligence through navigation of environment;
and a Cathedral event which will use the entire building as an Œinstrument1,
and many other ongoing conversations. We have the backing of the
University of Winchester and the arts and education institutions
in the City.
Having explored Science and Art (2004), Humour Art and the Brain
(2004) and Religion, Art and the Brain (2005, in past Art and Mind
events we have hosted: Antony Gormley exhibited Domain Field in
the Great Hall at the first Art and Mind Festival in 2004 and attracted
35,000 people. VS Ramachandran, Richard Gregory, Paul Robertson,
Brian Eno, John Tavener, Sufi and Tibetan dancers, Sadlers Wells,
AS Byatt and AC Grayling are some of the other distinguished names
that have taken part.
