Local Buildings Shortlisted for Prestigious
Award
9 April 2002, Susanne Boswell
TWELVE LOCAL INNOVATIVE BUILDINGS have beaten off stiff competition
from a range of new buildings within RIBA South to make it onto
the shortlist for the RIBA Awards. In Hampshire/Isle of Wight they
are: Artigiano in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight (designed by The
Manser Practice), the Southampton Magistrates Courthouse in Southampton
(Hampshire County Council Architects), the Theatre Royal in Winchester
(Burrell Foley Fischer LLP), and Whiteley Primary School in Whiteley,
Hampshire (Hampshire County Council Architects).
These projects are amongst 30 buildings that were submitted within
RIBA South. They will be visited during April 2002 by an Awards
jury. Buildings recommended for an Award at this stage are then
in the running for the Stirling Prize 2002.
Only 50 or so new buildings around the country are given RIBA Awards.
In 2001, the only building to receive an Award in RIBA South was
Hatherley Studio in Winchester, a private house designed for and
by the architect, Richard Rose-Casemore. Buildings that illustrate
cutting edge architecture are often selected as award winners within
the Region. There are 5 counties comprising RIBA South: Berkshire,
Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Oxfordshire.
Tony Chapman, Head of Awards at the RIBA said, "The standard
of entries this year is higher than ever, making shortlisting extremely
difficult. RIBA judges look for quality of design, whether the building
is large or small, but success in matching their clients' needs
and budgets can be equally important in the decision making. Entries
were shortlisted anonymously, so all practices are judged on a level
playing field."
Winners will be announced at an RIBA Awards dinner supported by
The Architects' Journal, held during Interbuild in Birmingham on
11 June. The complete list of buildings shortlisted within RIBA
South can be found at RIBA
South.
